Wisdom Teeth Removal In NW Calgary
Located at the back of your mouth, wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt, usually coming in for patients at around the age of seventeen. For many people, wisdom teeth do not have enough room to fit in our mouths properly and these additional teeth can cause crowding, discomfort, or overall aesthetic concerns. The best way to find out if you have room for your wisdom teeth is to make an appointment with a dentist at Panatella Dental in NW Calgary.
All of our services are performed by general dentists.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction Procedure
The time required for extractions depends upon many factors, including medical factors like the position of the wisdom teeth in relation to other anatomical structures, as well as personal factors like your anxiety level. The procedure for wisdom teeth removal in Calgary is broken down into three steps:
- Evaluation: an evaluation of your dental and medical history, as well as two types of x-rays: a panographic x-ray which provides an overall view of your head, neck and facial bones, and an intraoral x-ray which provides more detailed views of individual teeth.
- Surgery: local anesthetic is given to numb the area around your wisdom teeth to ensure that you are comfortable. General anesthetic may be requested. Once you are fully relaxed or asleep and your mouth is numb, the surgery will begin. The surgical method depends on whether your wisdom teeth are erupted or impacted, and on the shape of the roots.
- Recovery: healing begins immediately after surgery and patients should rest for a few days. You will be given instructions for home recovery. Enjoy soft foods and cool beverages. Smoking, alcohol consumption, and negative pressure caused by straws may delay healing and potentially cause “dry socket”. Pain from extractions will begin to decrease three days after extractions. If pain does not lessen, or if it gets worse, please see your dentist or oral surgeon for more help.
