Tooth Extractions in NW Calgary

Intense pain in your mouth could be caused by a number of problems, including broken teeth and teeth suffering from decay or periodontal problems. In some instances, your dentist may be able to fix the problem with a filling, crown, or root canal treatment, but that might not always be possible. Extractions are necessary in instances to prevent and solve pain, swelling and infection from a source tooth.

When there is too much damage or disease to repair the tooth, it will need to be extracted. A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its supporting structures in the jaw.

All of our services are performed by general dentists.

How is a Tooth Extraction performed?

There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical.

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions require the dentist to loosen the tooth and remove it without the need for cutting the gums, periodontal ligament, or tooth itself into sections. Your dentist will loosen your tooth with a tool called an elevator, then remove the tooth with forceps.

Surgical Extractions

Surgical extractions are more complex and are performed on teeth that have broken off at the gum line, have not yet erupted, or have curved or especially long roots. Your dentist may make a small incision in the gingiva near the tooth in question in order to help gain access to the tooth. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove some of the hard tissue around the tooth, or to cut the tooth into smaller pieces for easier removal.

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

The most common reasons for tooth extractions are severely broken down decayed teeth or teeth suffering from gum disease. Any teeth that are non-restorable, periodontally hopeless, or are necrotic and the individual declines a root canal treatment, will require extraction.

If you think you need a tooth extraction, contact our dentists.

Loose Tooth – If a tooth has become loose or painful due to gum disease, it may need to be removed.

Baby Teeth – Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out in time to make room for permanent teeth. If this is the case, the baby (primary) teeth need to be extracted.

Wisdom Teeth – Your third molars can create multiple problems. If your wisdom teeth are creating crowding, infection, or are decayed you’ll need to have them extracted.

Braces – Sometimes it may be necessary to extract one or more teeth to make room for moving teeth into the correct alignment.
