Tooth Extractions in NW Calgary

Tooth Extractions Could Impact Your Overall Oral Health

Intense pain in your mouth could be caused by a number of problems, including broken teeth and damage from tooth decay. In some instances, your dentist may be able to fix the problem with a filling or crown, but that’s not always the best option.

When there is too much damage to repair the tooth, it has to be extracted. A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in your jawbone.

All of our services are performed by general dentists.

How is a Tooth Extraction Performed?

There are two main types of tooth extractions: simple and surgical.

Simple Extractions

Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in your mouth. Your dentist will loosen your tooth with a tool called an elevator, then remove the tooth with forceps.

Surgical extractions are more complex and are performed on teeth that have broken off at the gum line or have not erupted yet. Your dentist will make a small incision into the gum near the infected tooth in order to remove the tooth. Sometimes it is also necessary to remove some of the bone around the tooth.

Do I Need a Tooth Extraction?

The most common reasons for tooth extractions are severely broken or decayed teeth that cannot be restored by typical treatments. However, there are many other instances when tooth extractions are necessary.

If you think you need a tooth extraction, contact our dentists.

Loose Tooth

If a tooth has become loose due to a sporting or other accident, it may need to be removed.

Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out in time to make room for permanent teeth. If this is the case, the baby teeth need to be extracted.

Your third molars can wreak havoc on your other teeth. If your wisdom teeth are coming in crooked or become infected, you’ll need to have them extracted.

If you’re getting braces, it may be necessary to extract one or more teeth to make room for the teeth shifting into correct alignment.
