What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, often called a cap, is a custom-made cover placed over a tooth to restore its shape, size, strength, and appearance. Crowns are commonly used when a tooth no longer has enough structure to support a filling or needs protection after being cracked, worn down, or treated with a root canal.

Crowns may be recommended when you need to:

Restore a heavily decayed or broken tooth

Protect a tooth after root canal therapy

Replace a large filling with insufficient natural tooth support

Improve the appearance, alignment, or shape of a tooth

Crowns are made from various materials, including gold, ceramics, and porcelain-fused-to-metal. While gold is extremely durable and biocompatible, ceramic crowns offer a more natural appearance — especially for front teeth.

How the Dental Crown Procedure Works

Placing a dental crown typically involves two visits to your dentist:

Step 1: Tooth Preparation & Temporary Crown

During your first appointment:

  • The tooth is reshaped by removing part of the enamel and dentin

  • An impression is taken to ensure a precise fit for your custom crown

  • A temporary crown is placed to protect the tooth while the permanent crown is made

Step 2: Final Crown Placement

At your second visit:

  • The temporary crown is removed

  • Your dentist carefully places and adjusts the permanent crown for proper bite and alignment

  • Once fit is confirmed, the crown is cemented in place

  • Normal chewing function typically resumes within a few hours

Living With Dental Crowns

How to Care for Your Crowns

Crowns are designed to look and feel like real teeth. As with your original smile, care must be taken to avoid tooth fractures. Good oral hygiene may help your crown last longer. It is recommended that you:

  • Brush and floss around your crowned tooth thoroughly to remove decay-causing bacteria

  • See your dentist regularly to help prolong the life of your crown

  • Ask your dentist about special cleaning aids

Things to Keep in Mind

  • Crowns are much like your natural teeth, and it is recommended to only use the same forces on them as you would with your natural teeth

  • Crowns, like any other dental work, will eventually need to be, replaced. However, the expected lifespan of a crown is much longer than that of a filling

  • Crowns can be made out of different materials. Gold is the most durable and biocompatible, but ceramics give the most realistic aesthetic appearance

  • Crowns are especially useful on teeth that have had root canal therapy
