Nitrous Oxide Sedation

You may never have heard the term nitrous oxide, but chances are that you’ve heard of laughing gas. Despite its name, the gas does not cause you to laugh, but instead slows down your nervous system, making you feel less inhibited. As a mild sedative, nitrous oxide is commonly used when performing dental procedures. The gas promotes calmness and is ideal for children or adults who may be averse to dental procedures.

What is Nitrous Oxide and How is it Administered?

Nitrous oxide is a colourless, odourless gas mixed with oxygen and inhaled by a mask placed over the nose. It is generally considered safe and easily administered with the proper care of your dental professional. The effects of the gas are felt within minutes and the effects wear off quickly with inhalation of oxygen which helps to purge the remaining gas from the lungs.

When to Use Nitrous Oxide for Sedation

Nitrous oxide can be helpful for patients who are nervous and fearful of dental procedures as it helps to reduce anxiousness. It is safe for children and can be useful in situations where a child must sit in the dental chair for an extended length of time.

Nitrous oxide also reduces the discomfort caused by the gag reflex that can occur as a result of routine dental work. As an alternate option for sedation and pain management, the gas is recommended for patients who don’t respond well to local anesthetics.
