Everything You Need to Know About Teeth Whitening

Many people are interested in achieving a brighter smile. The problem is that most of us just don’t know how to get the job done right.

Here’s a little bit of information about teeth whitening to help get you started.

Types of Treatment

This is one of the most commonly asked questions about having your teeth whitened. There are a few different ways you can go about getting whiter teeth. While each of these methods will achieve the desired results of a cleaner, whiter smile, they all work a little bit differently. Here’s a shortlist of three of the most common ways to obtain a whiter smile:

  1. Surface Whiteners: This term refers to whitening treatments that deal exclusively with removing surface stains from your teeth. If you’re worried about wearing out your teeth prematurely, don’t be. Because these whiteners are made with refined versions of abrasives that already exist in your run-of-the-mill toothpaste; they won’t damage your enamel. They usually come in the form of whitening toothpaste or chewing gum.
  2. Bleaches: Bleach treatments are generally peroxide-based, which means they’re capable of actually changing the colour of your teeth, as opposed to simply removing stains. Discoloured teeth can be caused by a number of different factors, so it’s important to consult your dentist before deciding on what treatment is right for you. Under certain circumstances, your teeth might not respond to bleach whitening treatments. This method should always be performed under the strict supervision of a dental professional
  3. ZOOM3! Whitening: ZOOM3! Whitening is a relatively short in-office procedure that uses whitening gel activated by a small but powerful light. This activation gently penetrates and removes discolouration.

In-Office Treatment Vs. Home Treatment

An In-office treatment takes less time; in many cases, you can achieve visibly whiter teeth with just one treatment. However, for individuals with sensitive teeth, a take-home treatment might be the way to go. Take-home treatments are more affordable and less invasive but will take multiple treatments to achieve the same degree of success. In the end, it all comes down to personal preference.
