Answers to Your Dental Crown Questions

Many people find dental crowns to be a comfortable and natural looking solution for some common complaints. Here are some answers to the questions we hear most often about crowns.

What Are Dental Crowns?

A dental crown is an artificial cap used to cover imperfections in your natural teeth. Dental crowns may not only improve the appearance of your smile but could also protect your teeth from further damage as long as you practice good oral hygiene and make regular dental cleaning appointments with your dentist.

Why Might I Need Dental Crowns?

You might need to get a crown if your natural teeth are damaged, discoloured, or misshapen. However, if your teeth are beyond repair, your dentist may recommend one or more tooth extractions and restoration using a dental implant.

What Are Dental Crowns Made of?

The most commonly used materials are gold, acrylic composite, porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal. Speak to your dentist for advice on which material, or combination of materials, would be best for you.

What is a Crown Procedure Like?

There are typically two appointments necessary when you are getting a crown.

First, your dentist will file the natural tooth to make room for the crown and take an impression of your mouth so a custom crown can be made for you. You’ll be fitted with a temporary crown while your custom crown is being made.

In the second appointment, your dentist will confirm that the crown is the right colour and shape before cementing it into your mouth.

How Long Do Dental Crowns Normally Last

On average, a crown may last about 10 years, provided you practice good oral hygiene. The exact durability of the crown depends on the individual and their habits as well as on the material that was used to create it.

What Do I Do if My Crown Breaks?

If your crown breaks, seek immediate dental care, especially if you are in pain.

Can I Still Get Crowns if I’m Pregnant?

Generally, yes. But you should speak to your dentists first. They will offer advice based on your individual situation.
