7 Tips for Maintaining Dental Health While Travelling

Vacation season is upon us! With all the excitement of the open road, people tend to forget about their daily routines, especially their oral hygiene routine. Here are 7 tips for maintaining your dental health while travelling.

1. Get Your Check-Up Before You Check-In

Avoid unpleasant vacation surprises by having a dental check-up before you head to the airport. Your dentist will be able to spot any issues that could end up ruining your fun in the sun.

2. Bring a List of Important Contacts

It’s always a good idea to bring your dentist’s contact information with you whenever you travel. If you run into issues, you can call for advice on whether to seek emergency dental care at your destination or book your appointment with an emergency dentist as soon as you get back to Calgary.

3. Maintain Your Pearly Whites

If you’ve recently had your teeth whitened, you’ll have to avoid beverages that could stain your teeth like red wine, coffee and soda for at least 48 hours after the whitening procedure. Drinking through a straw is a good way to protect your smile and still enjoy your vacation because it limits the impact that these liquids have on your teeth.

4. Pack the Essentials

Don’t forget to pack your toothbrush and dental floss! If you do happen to forget your toothbrush, always look for the softest toothbrush you can find when you get to your destination. Soft-bristled brushes are preferable because they are gentle on your teeth and gums.

5. Chew Sugarless Gum

Chewing sugarless gum after every meal is a great way to remove food debris from in between your teeth and keep your breath fresh in between brushing. Chewing gum can also help you cope with cabin pressure as your flight is taking off and landing.

6. Brush With Bottled Water

If the water quality is questionable where you are vacationing, always brush with bottled water. That way you and your family can stay safe and avoid traveller’s sickness.

7. Book an Appointment for When You Get Home

It’s easy to forget about your oral hygiene when you’re away from home. Get yourself back on track by booking a dental check-up and teeth cleaning session with your family dentist as soon as you get back.

Request an appointment to have your teeth checked before you take off on vacation.
